Hamas says it will contest upcoming Palestinian legislative elections despite PA restrictions

Senior Hamas official Husam Badran says the group intends to participate in the Palestinian legislative elections scheduled for Nov. 28, despite measures by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas that could prevent Hamas from running. Hamas rejected what it called political preconditions for participation and said it is prepared to compete and seek to form “the largest electoral bloc” with other factions.

Following Israel Katz’s comments on remaining in southern Lebanon, a US State Department official told i24NEWS: “A permanent military presence in southern Lebanon is inconsistent with the commitments set forth in the framework, or with the long-term peace and security of both countries.” The official said Washington supports Lebanon’s sovereignty and a gradual Israeli redeployment tied to the verified disarmament of Hezbollah and dismantling of its infrastructure.
