Israel PM says 'enlightened nations' must condemn teen's murder in W.Bank attack

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on "enlightened nations" to condemn the murder of a 13-year-old Israeli-American girl who was killed on Thursday in a stabbing attack in a West Bank settlement near Hebron.

Halel Yaffa Ariel suffered “very serious” penetrating wounds to her upper body, emergency medical responders said, after a Palestinian assailant broke into her house in the settlement of Kiryat Arba and stabbed the sleeping girl in her bedroom.

She was taken to hospital where she succumbed to her wounds. Thursday evening, the US State Department confirmed that Ariel held US citizenship.

"We have now confirmed that she is a US citizen," department spokesman John Kirby said of the girl identified as Hallel Yaffa Ariel. "This brutal act of terrorism is simply unconscionable."

The assailant, identified as Mohammed Nasser Tarayra, 19, from the village of Bani Naim just outside Hebron, was shot and killed, the Israel Defense Forces said.

Prime Minister Bejamin Netanyahu condemned the attack, calling it a horrifying murder of a young girl in her bed," and urged "enlightened nations" to do the same.

"The entire world needs to condemn this murder just as it condemned the terrorist attacks in Orlando and Brussels," Netanyahu said.

"I expect the Palestinian leadership to clearly, unequivocally condemn this vicious murder and take immediate action to stop the incitement," he continued.

"Enlightened nations must join in this demand and pressure the one who heads the incitement that leads to the murder of children in bed, " Netanyahu said.

Netanyahu said the attack underscores the bloodlust and inhumanity of incitement-driven terrorists that we are facing".

The Prime Minister ordered a lock down of the hometown of the attacker and set in motion measures to demolish his home, threatening to "revoke the work permits from all members of his clan."

Hundereds of people attended the funeral Halel Yaffa in Kiryat Arba, which was attended by Education Minister Naftali Bennett who addressed mourners and voiced his support for the settlement.

"Our enemies think they can cut off the chain of generations. We here will win. Whoever gives up Kiryat Arba gives up all of Israel. Therefore we are here. We must not err. This war will go on for as long as our enemies don’t give up trying to get rid of us… we will hold on, we will live in our land," he said.

"Let’s build it, in Sarona, Tel Aviv and in Hebron, Jerusalem, Jaffa, Itamar and Be’er Sheva," he added.

The attack came hours before a highly anticipated report by the UN's Middle East Quartet called on Israel to urgently halt settlement expansion to keep the hope of an Israeli-Palestinian peace settlement alive.

The army confirmed the assailant had broken into the settlement and broken into the house where he stabbed the sleeping girl in her bedroom.

As mourners visited the family home, the girl's father told AFP she had been sleeping late after a dance performance the night before and that he had been on his way to the house to wake her for work when he heard of the attack.

"At the first moment I thought everything was well, but I knew deep in my heart she was not alive," said Amichai Ariel, 59. "I shouted at her."

A civilian guard called to the scene was stabbed in the face by the attacker and sustained moderate injuries. The assailant was subsequently shot by another guard.

US citizen...perhaps now this horrendous murder will be reported in the mainstream media...like the US citizen attacked by a grizzly bear

Sad that this poor girl was put at risk by her living in the occupied West Bank requiring military protection. What was a US citizen doing in such a place?

Living a childs life

Funny Michael, the Palestinians and Arabs living in Israel don't face such hostilities from Israelis every day. I wonder why?! But by your logic, because you disapprove of Jews living in Judea and Samaria, they're "fair game" to murderous Palestinian monsters. You ignore (obviously) that under the original partition plan advanced in UN Resolution 181 in 1947, Jewish settlement in the West Bank and Gaza was permitted, just as Arab settlement in Israel was permitted. The law has not changed since then. Actual apartheid exists in the west bank where Jews aren't welcome.

Ken Little - "Living a childs life." A child's life is usually lived under the protection and wisdom of their parents. I suggest that in this regard it wasn't. "But by your logic, because you disapprove of Jews living in Judea and Samaria, they're "fair game" to murderous Palestinian monsters."? You are insulting and devious. NO-ONE is 'fair game'.

Insulting and devious?? Ooh, can't take some criticism?? You blatantly justified the murder of a sleeping child because of where she lived!! Maybe you should think before you post to avoid getting your feelings hurt.

"Insulting and devious?? Ooh, can't take some criticism?? You blatantly justified the murder of a sleeping child because of where she lived!! Maybe you should think before you post to avoid getting your feelings hurt. " Criticise me as you feel fit. You haven't hurt my feelings. I recognised your attempt to misrepresent me. Nothing justifies the murder. This is also true for the deaths of the innocent children in Gaza. Wasn't 'defense' the stated justification there?

"Despite the fact that Gaza is not as you say "occupied"" The UN and the EU both consider Gaza to be 'occupied'. Israel occupies its waters, its borders, its skies, its borders, its economy, its imports and its exports. Of course it's occupied!

"To seize possession of and maintain control over forcibly or by conquest: Israel does not have possession of Gaza." ... nor legally did it ever have, but it maintains control over it!

I see my reply to a post on here has been deleted..probably because it was to close to the truth for muslim employees of I24NEWS. I have noticed that when I make a certain person on here look silly, and so embarrassed for his stupidity he has my post deleted.. Israel certainly does not have control over the air in Gaza. Otherwise HAMAS would not have been able to send 11000 unguided rockets into Israel.. For the sake of the dummy who says that Israel has control of the skies...ROCKETS TRAVEL FROM THE GROUND IN GAZA UP INTO THE AIR ACROSS GAZA AND INTO ISRAEL.. the air above GAZA is also known as sky....got it? Israel stops GAZANS from entering ISRAEL, because when they were allowed to enter, they brought in bombs and blew up shops, markets etc.. So Israel is protecting it's OWN BORDER. Israel occupies it's own border..Gaza occupies it's own border... Israel does not permit terrorists to enter Israel..America and the rest of the world have a visa system, they can allow or refuse entry to people they may believe to be terrorists. It is called protecting it's borders.. Israel does not stop Gazans from exporting it's goods through Egypt does it? It does not stop Gazans from importing goods in from Egypt does it? So how does it control it;'simports and exports. Israel just does not buy goods from GAZA or import goods from Gaza. This is perfectly legal, but of course does not prohibit many goods to be exported into Gaza, like ELECTRICITY, that Gaza is always unwilling to pay for. Water and of course some people seem to forget the 950 trucks that go into Gaza every day with food, medicines, cement, steel etc.. EGYPT allows nowt. Now talking of Egypt. I do believe that Egypt also has a border with Gaza. YOUR WHOLE ARGUMENT AND OPINION IS BLOWN OUT OF THE WATER. Israel does not control all of the borders, or all of the skies, or all of the exports and imports or its economy.. you really ought to look at a map of the area..I do believe that Egypt has dug a giant moat along it's border with Gaza..WHY? because of terrorist activity from GAZA.. I hear that the EGYPTIANS also demolished hundreds of

homes on it's own border with Gaza..WHY because of terrorist tunnels from GaZA . but of course Egypt is not controlling borders with GaZA is it? No it is protecting it;s own borders..durghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. If some people had brains they would be really dangerous...Good job the employees of I24NEWS lack grey matter between their ears.
