Israeli security forces early on Thursday detained a Palestinian trying to cross into Israel from Gaza Strip, officials said.

The man was stopped as he was trying to jump over the security fence and taken for investigation.

The incident took place against the backdrop of a significant uptick in tensions primarily surrounding Israel’s installation, and eventual removal, of metal detectors on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount site.

However early reports in Israeli media suggested the man was unarmed and appeared to be fleeing to Israel in hope of finding employment rather than a militant plotting to perpetrate terror attacks.

The Hamas-controlled territory is suffering a humanitarian crisis and has the highest unemployment rate in the world.

It was recently aggravated by an energy crisis: Gazans currently receive only three to four hours of mains electricity a day, delivered from the territory's own power station and others in Israel and Egypt.
