Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman on Thursday met for the first time with freshly appointed White House National Security Adviser John Bolton, as Israel and Iran continued to exchange threats.

Liberman also met with other top White House aides on the first day of an official visit to the United States, hours after he told a Saudi newspaper that "these are the final days of the Iranian regime."

Bolton is known to be fiercely hostile to Iran, strongly pushing for withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal and taking military action against the country.

"John Bolton is a loyal friend of the State of Israel, who is very familiar with the Iranian threat," Liberman said after the meeting.

"We discussed this as well as the complex and sensitive situation in Syria. I am glad that we and the Americans see eye to eye on the situation in the Middle East and thank the government for their support of Israel."

Israel has repeatedly expressed alarm about what it says is Iran's military build-up in Syria, where it has propped up President Bashar Al-Assad since the first days of the civil war.

Iran has vowed to avenge a reported Israeli strike on an Iranian-operated air base in the country earlier in April.

Liberman also met with White House Middle East peace envoys Jason Greenblatt and Jared Kushner, as well as Israel's Ambassador to Washington, Ron Dermer.

He is slated to meet his counterpart, Defense Secretary James Mattis, later in the visit.

Meanwhile at the UN, Liberman was blasted by a Palestinian envoy for comments over a video that appeared to show soldiers whooping after shooting an unarmed Palestinian in the Gaza Strip

Liberman said the sniper should be promoted and the cameraman demoted, prompting the Palestinian representative to the Security Council to remark: "such willful targeting of civilians is terrorism. It is terrorism in every meaning of the word."
