Yossi Shelley, Israel's ambassador to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), told Kan on Tuesday that Kuwait may join the Abraham Accords within the next six months.

Shelley made the announcement on the sixth anniversary of the Abraham Accords.

Despite the unexpected declaration, Shelley didn't give any further details other than saying that the Emiratis were also working on closer cooperation.

Kuwait has largely resisted normalization with Israel. This is because unlike most other Gulf monarchies, Kuwait has a politically important and influential parliament.

The Kuwaiti parliament is heavily dominated by Islamists and Arab nationalists, two groups for whom opposition to the existence of Israel is a core tenet.

Despite Kuwaiti popular opposition to Israel, Emir Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah holds ultimate control over the country's foreign policy.
