Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu on Tuesday welcomed Colombia’s decision to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights, making the South American country only the second in the world, after the United States, to formally adopt that position.

In a video posted on X, Netanyahu invoked a famous Israeli slogan from the 1990s, declaring: “The people are with the Golan.” Pointing to a map of the strategic plateau, he added: “The Israeli flag flies here and will continue to fly here, because this is our land.”

Colombia’s decision came just days after the inauguration of its new president, Abelardo de la Espriella, a lawyer whose positions on Israel are markedly more favorable than those of his predecessor, Gustavo Petro.

De la Espriella has pledged to restore close diplomatic ties with Jerusalem and has said he intends to move Colombia’s embassy to the Israeli capital. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar attended his inauguration ceremony.

Bogotá’s recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights has drawn condemnation from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Syria.

The announcement also came only hours after a powerful magnitude-7.4 earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday. Israel had offered assistance to Colombian authorities following the disaster. Netanyahu, however, made no mention of the earthquake in his video addressing the Golan Heights.
