Netanya: a 20-year-old border guard killed after opening fire in a residential neighborhood
No other injuries or fatalities have been reported
A shooting caused panic on Saturday evening in Netanya, in the Kiryat Hasharon neighborhood. A young member of the Border Police, armed with a rifle, opened fire in the street and towards residences before shooting at the security forces who arrived on the scene. The police returned fire and fatally wounded him. No other injuries were reported.
The man has been identified as David Hoyer Amrani, 20, a member of the Border Police. Videos posted on social media show him dressed in civilian clothes, moving through the neighborhood with a long gun and a plastic chair.
In the first few minutes, several residents believed it was a terrorist attack and barricaded themselves inside their homes. “We heard screams and gunshots, we were convinced it was terrorists,” a witness recounted. However, the possibility of an attack was quickly ruled out.
David Hoyer Amrani joined the Border Police in August 2024. After his training, he was assigned to Hebron, within the units deployed in the West Bank, before joining the 19th company about eight months ago.
Officials are still looking for a reason behind his actions, though several media outlets have mentioned the possibility of post-traumatic stress. However, at this stage, no official information has confirmed this explanation.
Following the tragedy, Idan Kleiman, president of the IDF Disabled Veterans Organization, called for a thorough investigation and for strengthened psychological support for combatants.
The Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben-Gvir, said he shared the family's pain and assured that the Ministry of National Security, the Israeli police, and the border guards would continue to support them.
The investigation is ongoing to understand what led to the shooting.
