Israeli police questioned a Tel Aviv resident after a video circulated online showing him preventing several civilians from entering a shelter during a missile alert in the city center. The incident reportedly took place last Thursday inside a residential building while sirens were sounding across the area.

The man is also suspected of assaulting a woman who was present during the confrontation. After being questioned by police, he was released under certain restrictions while the investigation continues.

Authorities emphasized that blocking access to a protected space during an alert is a criminal offense in Israel. Beyond the moral obligation to protect human life, preventing people from reaching shelter during an emergency can place civilians in serious danger, officials said.

Police said officers were dispatched to the scene after a call was received by the 100 emergency hotline. They arrived to assess the situation and later summoned the suspect for questioning.

Following the release of the footage, the man acknowledged that he had reacted physically and said he “takes responsibility” for his actions. However, he argued that the video circulating on social media does not show the full context of what happened.

According to his account, he had asked those present to go to a nearby public shelter so that the building’s private shelter could remain available for its residents. He said tensions escalated after insults were exchanged during the stressful moments of the alert, including accusations directed at him.

People close to the suspect say he is a former soldier who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. Police said the investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
