War on crime: Israeli law enforcement conducts large-scale raids against protection rackets

Dozens of suspects were arrested Tuesday morning in large-scale raids carried out by the police in several cities in southern Israel. The arrests were part of a wide-scale operation led by the Lachish Central Unit and National Guard officers of the Border Police, on suspicion of operating a protection racket, extortion, and other criminal offenses.
Among the arrested suspects are also the head of a crime organization and dozens of senior members of the underworld.
The raid followed a wide-ranging investigation conducted by the Central Unit of the Lachish District in cooperation with National Guard fighters from the Border Police over the past few months. As part of the investigation, evidence and findings were collected against dozens of suspects, including key targets of the Southern District and additional individuals, who are suspected of being involved in protection rackets, extortion by threats, and other criminal offenses.

In the early morning, with the transition to the overt phase, detectives from the Lachish Central Unit, National Guard fighters from the Border Police, and officers from the Sahar Division, in cooperation with additional forces from the Southern District and special police units, conducted a large-scale raid on homes of suspects in Ashdod, Kiryat Gat, and other locations throughout the country. Dozens of suspects were arrested.
The suspects who were arrested were transferred for interrogation at the Central Unit of the Lachish District. Later today, they will be brought before the court for a hearing on the police's request to extend their detention, in accordance with the needs of the investigation.
