Israel’s Tamar Steinberg wins windsurfing world title
The reigning European champion leads an Israeli one-two finish in England, with Sharon Kantor taking silver and Daniela Peleg placing fourth
Israeli windsurfer Tamar Steinberg won her first world title at the iQFOiL championships in Weymouth, England, with compatriot Sharon Kantor taking silver.
Steinberg, 20, won Saturday’s final after dominating the qualifying stage, winning seven of 16 races. Fellow Israeli Daniela Peleg finished fourth.
The victory adds to Steinberg’s European title earlier this year and follows her silver medal at last year’s world championships.
"I’ve been waiting for this title for a long time and am overjoyed that it’s finally happened. I came into this competition with a clear goal to win and gave it my all from the very first moment, but with the medal race format, anything can happen—so it’s amazing that everything worked out for the best," Steinberg said.
"It’s been an incredible week for the entire team; this time, the final race really felt like the Israeli National Championship, given that almost the whole squad was here. There are so many people supporting me and pouring their hearts and souls into making this happen, and it’s really important for me to say a huge thank you to everyone."
Israel also won two windsurfing medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where Kantor took silver in the women’s event and Tom Reuveny claimed gold in the men’s competition.
