17 rockets land near Iraq air base hosting US soldiers: Iraqi military
No injuries or major damage caused by attack as Iraqi forces retaliate, kill three insurgents
A barrage of 17 rockets landed near an air base in northern Iraq where US troops are stationed, the Iraqi military said on Friday, cited by Reuters news agency.
No injuries or major material damage was caused due to the attack, the military noted.
It was also stated that the military retaliated against the insurgents, killing three of them and confiscating missiles.
Commander of the Iraqi military in the province of Nineveh said that the “terrorists got their response,” pointing to the destruction of a vehicle and the killing of three gunmen, as well as snatching three rockets while being transferred from the area.
A second vehicle carrying a missile was too seized during the operation, the Iraqi commander stated.
However, the statement did not mention who the culprits of the attack were nor was there any immediate claim of responsibility, Reuters reported.
The targeted Qayyarah Airfield West base, located in the Mosul District, hosts US soldiers who serve as part of the international coalition against Islamic State (IS) group. It also hosts American warplanes that are used in the war against IS.
