Algeria announced on Thursday that it had severed diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates following months of mounting political tension. Algerian officials said all 'efforts to preserve bilateral ties had been exhausted.'

In a statement, Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused Abu Dhabi of continuing what it described as “provocative and hostile actions” despite repeated warnings. The ministry said recent developments had exceeded what could reasonably be tolerated in relations between two sovereign states.

The Emirati ambassador was summoned to the ministry and formally informed of the decision. The ambassador was given 48 hours to leave Algeria.

Tensions have intensified in recent months amid disagreements over several issues affecting North Africa and the Sahel.

Algeria has accused the UAE of interfering in its domestic affairs and supporting various regional actors. Abu Dhabi’s close relationship with Morocco has also become a major source of friction, particularly because of the continuing dispute over Western Sahara.

The two countries have taken differing positions on the conflicts in Libya, Mali, and Sudan. The UAE’s expanding relationship with Israel has created an additional source of tension, given Algeria’s strong opposition to normalization with Israel.

In February, Algeria moved to terminate its air services agreement with the UAE, offering an early indication of the deterioration in relations.

The decision follows a series of accusations and diplomatic warnings exchanged amid growing competition between Algeria and the UAE for influence over regional affairs.

The UAE has not yet issued an official response to the announcement.
