Iranian FM says Tehran has offered new 7-day proposal to reopen the Strait
“We have introduced a plan to the United States through the mediators that if certain conditions are met . . . the strait will be open in seven days.”
Iran has sent the United States a proposal that could reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days of Washington accepting its terms, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Thursday.
Speaking to reporters in New York on September 24 during the UN General Assembly, Araghchi said Iran had sent the proposal to Washington through an intermediary, according to reports by The Financial Times, The New York Times and CNN.
“We have introduced a plan to the United States through the mediators that if certain conditions are met . . . the strait will be open in seven days.”
He said reopening the waterway would be followed by renewed negotiations on a lasting agreement to end the war.

The proposal reportedly draws on a memorandum of understanding reached by Washington and Tehran in June. That agreement provided for a 60-day extension of a ceasefire and a gradual return of shipping through the strait, but collapsed in early July amid disputes over vessel movements.
The Trump administration has resisted returning to the June framework and wants a broader deal that also addresses Iran’s nuclear program, the FT reported.
A White House official declined to comment on the new proposal, while describing talks through mediators as “positive and constructive.”
