Iran rebuilds site linked to past nuclear weapons research, satellite images show

Iran has begun rebuilding the Taleghan 2 site near Tehran, a facility Western experts have linked to past research that may have been relevant to nuclear weapons development, according to satellite imagery analyzed by the Institute for Science and International Security.

The images reportedly show both the reconstruction of damaged facilities and the addition of structures that analysts believe are intended to better protect the site from future attacks. Taleghan 2 was significantly damaged during Israeli military operations targeting Iranian infrastructure.

Located within the Parchin military complex, Taleghan 2 has long been closely monitored because of its history. Experts have previously associated the facility with research involving high-powered explosives and equipment that could have applications in nuclear weapons design.

The renewed construction does not, by itself, prove that Iran has decided to build a nuclear weapon. Satellite imagery can reveal new buildings and other physical changes, but it cannot establish with certainty what activities will take place inside them.

Tehran has repeatedly maintained that its nuclear program is intended solely for peaceful purposes and has denied seeking nuclear weapons. However, past activities at several Iranian military sites remain under scrutiny by intelligence agencies and nuclear-proliferation experts.

The reconstruction of Taleghan 2 is therefore likely to be closely watched for evidence about the purpose of the new facilities and any possible resumption of sensitive research.
