U.S. President Donald Trump told Politico on Thursday that “the United States will help in choosing Iran's new Supreme Leader,” signaling Washington’s interest in the succession process following Ali Khamenei’s eventual departure.

Trump also commented on the possibility of Kurdish action against the Iranian regime, saying he “thinks it’s great if they want to do that.”

Following the death of Ali Khamenei, reports indicate that his second son, Mojtaba Khamenei, is now the likely successor—a shift that would break with the traditions of the Islamic Revolution founder, Ruhollah Khomeini.

A formal decision on the succession, originally expected yesterday, was reportedly delayed due to fears of assassination. The Assembly of Experts, an 88-member council of clerics authorized to select Iran’s Supreme Leader, is responsible for the decision. Notably, the council was targeted in an Israeli attack earlier this week.

Mojtaba Khamenei, born in 1969 in Mashhad, his father’s birthplace, fought in the Iran-Iraq War and cultivated ties with senior figures in today’s Revolutionary Guard.

He studied in Qom alongside Iran’s top Shiite clerics and was ordained as a cleric himself. Analysts describe him as highly conservative, potentially more hardline than his father, and well-positioned to assume control of Iran’s theocratic leadership.
