Egypt: At least 21 dead and dozens injured in a bus accident in southern Sinai, on 02.09.2026

At least 21 people were killed and dozens injured when a bus overturned on the road between the Red Sea towns of Dahab and Nuweiba in Egypt's South Sinai governorate early Wednesday, Egypt's health ministry said, with Jordanian nationals among the casualties.

Egypt's health ministry said the death toll from the crash has risen to at least 21. Jordan's foreign ministry said a number of Jordanians were on board the bus, with initial information indicating some were killed and injured.

The bus overturned on the Dahab-Nuweiba road, one of the main routes through the highly touristic South Sinai region, popular among scuba diving and snorkeling visitors to the Red Sea.

Twenty ambulances were dispatched to the scene to treat victims and transport the injured to nearby hospitals, the health ministry said. The exact cause of the crash has not yet been determined.

The accident is the latest in a series of deadly road incidents in Egypt in recent weeks. Last month, at least 15 people were killed and dozens injured in a separate crash in Egypt's Ismailia governorate.

Traffic accidents remain common across Egypt, with authorities reporting nearly 6,000 road fatalities in 2025, often attributed to reckless driving and poor road maintenance.
