A British report has revealed that the Gaza Board of Peace has issued the first construction contract for a planned military site inside the Gaza Strip, intended to host a contingent of Moroccan soldiers as part of new security arrangements for the territory's next phase.

According to The Guardian, citing a source familiar with the matter, the contract—still pending final approval—was awarded to Arkel International, a company that has previously carried out projects for the US government in countries including Iraq.

A small base for Moroccan forces

The report says the planned military base will measure approximately 100 by 120 meters and is designed to accommodate a unit of around 150 Moroccan soldiers.

The source said the Moroccan troops would rotate into Gaza from a base inside Israel. The facility is expected to be built in an Israeli-controlled area of the Gaza Strip, about 1.6 kilometers (1 mile) from the Israeli border.

New security arrangements in Gaza

The report indicated that the site will be equipped with a rapid evacuation route, in order to deal with any potential security threats that may face the forces inside.

The project comes amid international and regional efforts to establish new security and administrative arrangements for Gaza, including discussions over the potential role of multinational forces in supporting stability and reconstruction during the post-war phase.
