Security agencies affiliated with the Saudi-backed Yemeni government announced on Tuesday the killing of Abu Hudhayfah al-Ansari, a senior leader of ISIS and the group’s official spokesperson. Al-Ansari was eliminated during a special security operation carried out by forces belonging to the coalition supporting the Yemeni government in cooperation with a Yemeni counterterrorism unit.

According to the official statement, the forces initially attempted to arrest al-Ansari, but the operation ended with his death. Authorities explained that the operation was carried out by coalition special forces, with the support of Yemen's "Force 22" counterterrorism unit, who withdrew from the operation site after completing their mission.

Yemeni officials did not disclose the location where the operation was carried out or provide additional details regarding the circumstances of the ISIS leader’s killing, only confirming that there were no civilian casualties or damage.

Abu Hudhayfah al-Ansari is considered one of the most prominent figures associated with the central leadership of ISIS. His name came to the forefront in August 2023, when he announced in an audio recording the death of the group’s then leader, Abu al-Hussein al-Husseini al-Qurashi, and the appointment of Abu Hafs al-Hashimi al-Qurashi as his successor.

Since then, al-Ansari has taken on the role of the official spokesperson for ISIS, appearing in a number of recordings and propaganda messages published in the name of the organization.

Yemeni media reported that one of his most recent recorded messages appeared in February of this year, during which he attacked the Syrian authorities and called on ISIS members to continue fighting. This underscores the significance of his death for the organization’s media and propaganda apparatus, in addition to its potential impact on its branch in Yemen.

The killing of al-Ansari comes at a time when the Yemeni government is intensifying its security operations against extremist organizations in areas under its control, amid efforts to enhance cooperation with the United States in the fields of training and developing counterterrorism capabilities.

Despite the decline in ISIS’s strength in Yemen compared to the period when it reached the peak of its activity during the civil war, the organization still maintains cells capable of carrying out attacks in areas where the central government’s control is weak. Government forces also face a constant threat from Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, which remains particularly active in the south and east of Yemen.
