The United Arab Emirates is preparing to support potential military action to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, according to Arab officials cited in a WSJ report, marking a significant shift that could make it the first Gulf state to take a direct combat role following Iranian attacks. The move comes as concerns grow over global energy supplies and maritime security in one of the world’s most critical shipping lanes.

Officials said the UAE is lobbying for a United Nations Security Council resolution that would authorize the use of force to secure the strait. Emirati diplomats have also urged the United States and allied powers in Europe and Asia to form a coalition to reopen the waterway. An Emirati official said Tehran “thinks it is fighting for its existence and is willing to bring the global economy down with it in a chokehold on the strait.”

The UAE is reviewing options for a direct military role, including mine-clearing operations and other forms of logistical and operational support. Arab officials added that the Gulf state has proposed that the US take control of strategic islands in the waterway, including Abu Musa, which is controlled by Iran but claimed by the UAE.

In a statement, the Emirati Foreign Ministry pointed to a separate UN resolution condemning Iranian attacks on its cities, as well as a decision by the International Maritime Organization criticizing the closure of the strait. The ministry said there is “broad global consensus that freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz must be preserved.”

Iran has intensified its military response in recent days, sharply increasing missile and drone attacks on the UAE after weeks of lower-level strikes. According to Arab officials, nearly 50 ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones were launched at the Emirates on Tuesday alone. Tehran has warned it would target critical civilian infrastructure in any Gulf state supporting efforts against it, specifically naming the UAE. Officials added that Iran has launched nearly 2,500 missiles and drones at the UAE since the start of the conflict, more than at any other country, including Israel.

Regional dynamics are also shifting. Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states are increasingly aligning against Iran, with officials indicating support for continued military pressure, though most have not committed forces. Bahrain is sponsoring the proposed UN resolution, with a vote expected Thursday.

The UAE’s position represents a departure from its previous approach, which emphasized economic ties and diplomatic engagement with Iran. Gulf officials said that prior to the outbreak of war on February 28, the UAE viewed Iran as a difficult but rational actor. However, they said recent attacks, including strikes targeting hotels and airports in Dubai, have altered that assessment. Despite long avoiding a formal combat role, the UAE is now reconsidering its posture as it weighs participation in efforts to secure the strait and counter Iranian actions.
