Facebook changes name to 'Meta' amid Facebook Papers scandal
The new platform will focus on delivering an augmented reality experience
Facebook announced on Thursday that the social media giant is changing its company name to “Meta,” reflecting a desire to construct an augmented reality “metaverse” on the platform.
While the company is changing its name, the flagship social network site will remain as "Facebook," according to The Washington Post.
The change is also accompanied by a switch in logos - Facebook’s iconic blue and white symbol will be swapped for a bent blue infinity sign.
Meta will explore new ways to connect people digitally through a metaverse, a term for an online shared space that can be enhanced by augmented reality.

“The metaverse will feel like a hybrid of today’s online social experiences, sometimes expanded into three dimensions or projected into the physical world,” a news statement from the company explained on their website.
“It will let you share immersive experiences with other people even when you can’t be together — and do things together you couldn’t do in the physical world.”
Facebook came under fire in recent weeks over the Facebook Papers controversy, brought after company whistleblower Francis Haugen spoke out against the social media giant.
Haugen testified before the United States Congress, voicing her concerns that Facebook repeatedly placed profitability ahead of protecting users from harmful content.
The incident prompted legislators from around the world, including in the European Union, Israel, and the US, to weigh the potential for regulating the platform.
