Uganda’s military confirmed on Tuesday that the state was conducting air and artillery raids against the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a rebel Islamist faction located in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo).

The operation was conducted alongside Congo’s armed forces, according to a statement from a representative of the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF).

“This morning, we have launched joint air and artillery strikes against ADF camps with our Congolese allies,” a tweet from the UPDF’s spokesperson account announced.

Additionally, the raids were confirmed by Patrick Muyaya, a politician and spokesperson for the DR Congo’s government.

Muyaya said “targeted and concerted action with the Ugandan army started today with air strikes and artillery fire from Uganda against positions of the terrorist ADF” in the DR Congo, according to Al Jazeera.

Uganda attributed a series of fatal suicide bombings in the country’s capital to the armed group. The militant faction was also accused of conducting attacks in the DR Congo.

On Monday, the DR Congo’s government said no troops from Uganda were in the country’s borders, and explained that there would not be joint operations between Kampala and Kinshasa.

“We have not said there will be joint operations. We have said there will be concerted actions,” Muyaya explained, Al Jazeera reported.
