Al Jazeera airs never-before-seen footage of Deif, documents on Hamas preparations for Oct. 7
Footage shows Mohammed Deif discussing battle plans, while documents aired by the network purportedly include an attack order signed two days before the massacre

Al Jazeera broadcast previously unseen footage of Hamas military chief Mohammed Deif on Friday, alongside documents it said detailed preparations for the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel.
The footage included scenes of Deif in an operations room, examining models of Israeli tanks and discussing battle plans with brigade commanders. Other clips showed senior Hamas figures meeting inside tunnels beneath Gaza.

One document, dated October 5, 2023, was presented as an operational order signed by Deif after a six-hour command meeting. According to the broadcast, it set the attack’s start time at 6:30 a.m. A second document, attributed to a February 2023 meeting of Hamas’s inner military command, purportedly recorded a decision to begin preparations for the assault.
The material covered several periods. One underground gathering of Hamas’s military leadership predated May 2021, the Times of Israel reported, noting the presence of Bassem Issa, a brigade commander killed that month. Those pictured included Deif, his deputy Marwan Issa and Mohammed Sinwar. All the commanders shown at that gathering have since been killed by Israel, according to the report.

The broadcast also showed Deif visiting a rocket manufacturing workshop with Yahya Sinwar and Ismail Haniyeh. A separate recording featured a conversation between Sinwar and Deif about the ceasefire ending the May 2021 fighting between Israel and Hamas.
Deif, one of the architects of the October 7 attack, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza on July 13, 2024. The Hamas-led massacre that killed about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and saw 251 others taken hostage to Gaza, was the deadliest day for the Jewish people since the Holocaust.
