Mor Shamli, whose husband Alon was shot dead in front of her by an Egyptian police officer in October 2023, died at 35, her family said Friday. Her parents described the severe psychological distress she experienced following the attack and asked for privacy.

The circumstances of her death were not immediately clear. In January, Shamli announced on Instagram that she intended to seek assisted suicide in Switzerland. Reports announcing her death did not confirm whether she had undergone the procedure.

Alon Shamli, 34, was killed on October 8, 2023, when an Egyptian police officer opened fire on an Israeli tour group near Pompey’s Pillar in Alexandria. Mor was with him during the attack, which took place a day after the Hamas-led massacre in southern Israel, the single deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust.

Another Israeli, Amnon Bezalel, and an Egyptian tour guide were also killed. A third Israeli, Hagai Efrat, was seriously wounded and died of his injuries on October 19.

Alon worked as a physical education teacher and coached a Hapoel Tel Aviv youth soccer team. Following his death, Mor worked to preserve his memory and sought answers about the handling of the shooting and the proceedings against the gunman. She said in a recent interview that she had received conflicting information about the case and that the killer had still not been punished.
