Qatar is awaiting a response from Tehran, which could arrive as early as Thursday, regarding a new nuclear deal proposal, i24NEWS learned.

Under the current proposal, Iran will take specific steps regarding its nuclear program and in return sanctions would be eased and some funds unfrozen, two regional diplomats told i24NEWS.

The proposal would see the return of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors to various nuclear sites.

On Tuesday, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi briefed members of the UN Security Council, stating that only the return of inspectors to those sites could provide an accurate picture of the status of Iran’s nuclear program.

The difficulty in negotiations between the US and Iran thus far stems from Iran's demand for the lifting of the 'siege' (economic pressure) and some relief from sanctions before addressing the nuclear issue.

The Trump administration, however, has insisted that a step toward addressing the nuclear issue must be taken as part of the very first phase.
