Pope Leo XIV diagnosed with lung cancer, undergoes surgery to remove part of lung
The operation lasted approximately 90 minutes and was successful, Pope Leo XIV will remain hospitalized for at least one week for observation

Pope Leo XIV was diagnosed with lung cancer and had part of his right lung removed, the Vatican announced on Tuesday.
The Pope underwent thoracic surgery at Gemelli Hospital on Tuesday afternoon, where surgeons removed the lower lobe of his right lung.
Doctors confirmed the suspected diagnosis of cancer as tissue was examined during the surgery.
The operation lasted approximately 90 minutes and was successful, according to doctors.
Pope Leo regained consciousness normally after surgery and returned to his hospital room following a brief period of observation.
Further updates regarding the Pope's health are expected in the coming days, with confirmation that he will remain hospitalized for at least one week.
Leo XIV was elected Pope only last year, becoming the first American pope in history and the second from the Western Hemisphere after his predecessor, Pope Francis.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he and his wife were praying for the pope, adding, "May the Lord give him strength and the Holy Spirit guide the medical professionals taking care of the Holy Father."
