IDF names second soldier killed from combat operation in southern Lebanon
Master Sgt. Maher Khatar, 38, from Majdal Shams, and Staff Sgt. Or Demry, 20, from Liman, both served in the 91st Division’s Combat Engineering Corps

The Israel Defense Forces said two combat engineering soldiers were killed during an attack on troops operating in southern Lebanon overnight.
One of the fallen soldiers was Master Sgt. Maher Khatar, 38, from Majdal Shams, who served in the Combat Engineering Corps within the 91st Division. The second soldier was later identified as Staff Sgt. Or Demry, 20, from Liman, a heavy machinery operator in the 91st Division’s combat engineering unit.
According to an initial military investigation, the troops were working to retrieve a disabled vehicle from a position in southern Lebanon when the attack occurred. During the operation, a D9 armored bulldozer was attempting to extract a tank that had become stuck near an army post.
Missiles were fired at the forces, striking the bulldozer and killing the two soldiers. Military officials said the exact type of projectile used in the attack—possibly an anti-tank missile or mortar round—has not yet been confirmed.
Immediately after the attack, Israeli Air Force fighter jets struck several targets in the area, while Israeli forces opened heavy fire toward positions believed to be linked to the launch site, according to a military official.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed condolences to the families of the two soldiers, saying he and his wife, along with all Israelis, share in their “deep sorrow.” He described Khatar as “an example and inspiration to young men from the community… who are enlisting in the ranks of the IDF,” calling it part of “the eternal alliance between us.”
Netanyahu added that the two soldiers “fell fighting bravely to protect our communities and citizens against the terrorist organization Hezbollah,” and said Israel “bows its heads” in mourning while remaining committed to defending the northern border.
The IDF said its forces continue to operate in forward defensive positions along the northern front to protect residents of northern Israel. Military officials added that regional divisions are conducting ongoing assessments and remain prepared for potential escalation.
“The IDF will continue to operate with force and determination to prevent enemy attacks and eliminate any threat posed to the State of Israel and its residents,” the military said, adding that it shares the families’ grief and will continue to support them.
