Israel experienced a sharp escalation in rocket fire from Lebanon late Wednesday into Thursday.

Beginning around 8 p.m., air raid alerts sounded in waves across multiple regions as approximately 200 rockets were launched toward Israeli territory. No injuries were reported. In response, the Israel Defense Forces carried out strikes against several targets in Lebanon.

Officials close to Prime Minister Netanyahu are reportedly advocating for an expansion of the buffer zone in southern Lebanon and a stronger IDF presence beyond current lines of contact.

A restricted security meeting was held Wednesday evening under the prime minister’s leadership to discuss threats from both the Lebanese and Iranian fronts. According to a source familiar with the discussions, the army has already reinforced its deployment in Lebanon since the resumption of hostilities, but officials are now debating a broader operational extension.

In the hours preceding the escalation, rumors circulated of an impending surge in rocket fire, while the IDF did not provide clear real-time updates.

Some municipal officials issued their own alerts to residents based on partial information, adding to public confusion. A security official acknowledged a communication lapse, citing the lack of a unified public message that allowed rumors to spread.

Israeli security authorities also suspect coordination between the attacks from Lebanon and Iran Hezbollah.

Despite prior assessments indicating that roughly 70% of Hezbollah’s operational capabilities had been neutralized, the group has demonstrated significant remaining strength, including coordinated attacks from multiple locations and the use of precision rockets with warheads weighing several hundred kilograms capable of reaching central Israel. Unlike strikes originating from Iran, Hezbollah attacks are not always preceded by advance warning.
