Israeli embassy seeks contact with tourists as heavy rain disrupts travel in Nepal

The Israeli Embassy in Nepal is working to locate several Israelis who have lost contact amid days of heavy rain that have blocked roads and disrupted travel across the country, the embassy said Sunday.

Some of the Israelis are tourists staying in mountainous areas that are difficult to reach. Embassy staff are in contact with local tour companies and guides as they try to establish their whereabouts.

The embassy said it is also working to help Israelis reach safer areas where conditions allow.

The disruption comes about a month after a sudden flood struck Nepal. The National Disaster Risk Management Authority reported 919 deaths and about 4,700 people missing on both sides of the border, including nearly 600 foreign nationals.

The United States has pledged $500,000 to help communities affected by the earlier floods. At least 54 Americans, most of them tourists, were reported missing after the flooding and mudslides.
